Two Bowls of Asian Desserts

The one Asian dessert I do enjoy is cheng tng (清湯). I discovered it as an adult, and never looked back. I've tried the best version of it- chockfull of traditional ingredients, and tediously boiled by a friend's mom. It's gorgeous cold.

The other dessert that I don't often eat is tang yuan (湯圓) because it's too sticky and gooey, even when filled with sesame or peanut. But when these glutinous rice flour balls sit in ginger soup (薑湯), I'll eat them. I love ginger! No, I don't like ah balling peanut soup. The rest of the desserts, naaah, I'm not too hot about them. I also prefer these tong shui (糖水) cold. If it's too sweet, I can always add water or ice cubes to dilute it.

I also found a fairly decent dessert shop in Mei Heong Yuen that does good versions of these desserts. The man loves their peanut paste (生磨花生糊) and milk pudding (燉奶). He generally likes all types of dessert. Hurhurhur.

That night when I was tired and grouchy, and had no appetite (but no indigestion), I didn't want a heavy dinner. The man had his biryani, mutton masala and dhal waiting in the fridge. After walking the dog, we drove by an empty Liang Seah Street and stopped at Mei Heong Yuen. We had a parking space right in front of the shop. No queues. This dessert shop is always crowded and it's virtually impossible to find parking in the area. But now, well, everything is up for grabs.

The man was thrilled and bought a few usual tubs to-go. The desserts keep well in the fridge. When I scrolled through the menu, I had a sudden craving tang yuan in ginger soup! Heh. Got that and it was considered dinner. That went down really well. It filled me up for the night, and made my stomach very happy.

My parents have bought home walnut paste from this dessert stall at 100AM. Quite yummy. Not too sweet. I shall try their other desserts in future as I saw from the website that they have another branch at Novena Velocity (which I walked past a few times but not thought of trying).

by any chance, is this Ah Chew Desserts? There's one of it across from velocity at Goldhill Plaza. You can see it if you stand outside Velocity at the road junction. Ah Chew Desserts is pretty good too!
