Shiny Fish at Miraku

Miraku
refreshed their menu for the quarter and we went for lunch. Scheduled afternoon meetings meant that I couldn't have sake at lunch; had to remain very sober. Nope, no beer. I promptly ordered a glass of umeshu. Hurhurhur. V decided to have umeshu too. Two glasses each for us nicely accompanied the meal.

We didn't go overboard with the food; stuck to the lunch menu. Nine pieces of sushi with an appetizer, a scallop and corn chawanmushi, a little snack, akari clams red miso soup, an uni-don and a dessert of strawberry ice-cream and matcha pudding were more than enough to fill the stomach.

Chef Hei probably saw my reservation and made sure he had the fish that I wanted today. He kindly skipped the tuna that we didn't want, and offered all the shiny fish (光りもの、鮨) as sushi for us. Barracuda, gizzard shad, cured anago maki and such. Hurrah. Luckily I took an antihistamine. There were prawns and shellfish too.

The cute kibinago (黍魚子, silver-stripe round herring) reminded me of the tiny ones that Choya eats. Hahaha. Yes, she takes them too. My favorite fish today would have to be the marlin (kajiki, 旗魚). It was tasty and muscular. (This is why I'm not fond of tuna or its associated fatty cuts.) Mmmmmm. It was a very satisfying lunch had in very welcomed company.
