A Sofar Evening at Kizuna

Stopped by Kizuna for an evening of music organized by Sofar Sounds. They're currently active on IG, and show dates are announced there. While the event is free, you need a ticket for entry, and while the general vicinity of the event is announced, only ticket holders will know the venue and exact address on the day itself.

There were three artists in the line-up. Jason Yu began the evening at 6.30pm. The new full-time artist plays covers of course, as a busker. He would have to be able to do very decent covers in order to get any sort of transport covered for the evening. He has his originals too, and he did those tonight. 'Hearts Release' (2018) and 'Now I Know' (2020) are the familiar tunes. Jason has plans for another single and an EP.

I forgot to ask for the list of artists, but I figured I would get the information when I turned up. These are definitely new-to-me musicians. It doesn't matter who they are. Only their music does. I don't need to be too critical or care that the music is to my taste. It's always lovely to see the young adults pursue music in whatever and whichever way they can, from organizing gigs, to co-hosting, to the musicians themselves.

Then we had Sean Ng with the moniker The Colour Fool. Accompanied by Marcus on percussion and bits of vocals, Sean was both on the guitar and the keyboard. His original kinda jazzy tunes are put out on Apple and Spotify

There were drinks and food too. Limited choices in order to optimized food prep and service logistics, but they were fine by me. I didn't have to go hungry. There were mini negitoro-don, bangers and mash, and a charcoal grilled pork belly with hot sauce. I stuck to easy whisky sodas with a ton of ice for the night. I didn't intend to drink a lot and I definitely wasn't going to mix my drinks and end up with a hangover.

YAO and his band for the night closed the evening with pretty good pop tunes. This is also my pick of the night. It's not about the music. It's about how he lends layers to it. Stylized as YAØ, he has been pretty active with single and EPs. He only just released his album 'Broke Pop Kids' (July 2022) under Universal Music.

I really like gigs that have an early start time, begin on time and end on time. Tonight's show at Kizuna began at 6pm and ended by 8.45pm. Kizuna is located in a residential area, so events would have to adhere to sound limits (= acoustic gigs) and time frame (to end by 10pm). This is the first Sofar SG gig in two years! Ahhh, it's really fun to hang out at gigs again in this way. I've missed this so much.
