Sushi Hashida

I haven't bothered to visit Hashida much at its Amoy Street address. When a restaurant keeps harping on its wagyu and bluefin tuna, I tend to stay away. If a sushi and sashimi meal means you flood me with a whole host of otoro and chutoro, and wagyu beef, then these forms of protein aren't something I appreciate. Went to dinner with J as my 七夕 date. It was completely unintentional; we just happened to fix dinner on a weekday. Heh.

The appetizer of cold fish paste noodles with tomato consommé topped with daikon and uni was gorgeous. I could eat that all day. It was accompanied by a complimentary glass of champagne. Mmmm. That was a lovely gesture. The sashimi was okaaaay. I didn't really need it if there was sushi. Although I did request for the sushi to come with a small rice portion. J needed her carbs and opted for the regular portion of rice with her fish.

My instructions of 'no tuna including negitoro' was well remembered. So The server asked if bonito was okay. I said yes. For the layperson, bonito isn't bluefin tuna, and it would fulfil ethical principles since I'm not inclined to eat it. The bonito is just a tiny tuna, although it can be skipjack tuna. It does taste similar to a piece of akami or... tuna sandwich. Hurhurhur. I can do two small slices of bonito.

Out trotted the parade of fish — kinmedai, butterfly, nodoguro, yellowtail, tai, ayu, aji, shima aji, botan ebi, et cetera. I especially love the handroll of grilled tachiuo topped with uni. I wasn't expecting to see a silver belt fish tonight, so it was a bonus. Restaurants really don't offer enough hikarimono sushi in a pricey omakase dinner.

For a restaurant like Hashida, and a dinner at S$450++ per pax, I definitely paid attention when the servers wiped off the condensation on my glass of cold water with ice cubes, and bothered to replace it with a new glass during the second half of the meal. My glass of sake was automatically refilled each time I reached out for it. I chose two expressions of junmai ginjo from Katsuyama which went beautifully with the food and my mood/tastebuds tonight.

The tamago-yaki was gorgeous. There was some lemon parfait thingy for dessert that I absolutely hated. EIYERRRRR. I don't mind sour, but I don't like lemon! Eeeeps. The fruits went down so much better with me. Then again, I always have better fruits stocked up at home. Hurhurhur.
