Decided that the food at Wang Da Fu (旺大福) is pretty decent. The menu is what I categorize as belonging to a homestyle Taiwanese izakaya. It's exactly a passion project by its owners. Owner-chef Philip wants to keep it as a causal hangout for everyone. It opened five months ago in July. I like the easy vibes and the sheltered outdoor seats with an overhead fan. If you don't have food allergies, this is a fun venue to hang out on a no-brainer night. Katong is pretty accessible to us and dinner can happen even if it's storming out.
Tonight, we were a table of four. We could order a few dishes to share. Portions were not huge, but they all add up. Unless you're super hungry, just have these as communal plates. The kitchen was out of samsui chicken. Never mind. There were still pig trotters beehoon, kong bak pau and Sichuan ribeye steak. We also added a bowl of hua diao chicken soup (花雕雞湯), Nanjing salted duck and grilled hamachi collar. That soup was a bit oily since they used a huge drumstick with skin, but it was flavorful!
Philip was so kind! He waived corkage for our bottle of Touraine-Amboise Loire Valley chenin sec because we got a bottle of Demarie Barolo Riserva from the menu. He also allowed us to bring over dessert from Wan Mei (碗美) three doors down. Yay! Of course we ate and cleared out and binned the dessert bowls ourselves.
