After a series of botched attempts, and one caused by us because we completely forgot about tickets to a gig that night, we finally found a date for dinner at Humpback to celebrate both E and M's birthdays.
The man and I arrived earlier at the restaurant because he wanted happy-hour oysters but our dining companions don't do them. I didn't mind some because the only oysters I really really like are those from the Pacific Northwest, and very specifically Puget Sound. There's something about the briny metallic ratios.
We also wanted drinks at happy-hour prices. Wheeeeee! Get there before 7pm. Order three drinks each. Hurhurhur. The man was thrilled with his tray of oysters. He had two rounds of it. Ordered three oysters each from their selection tonight. Gave half an oyster to Choya. She accepted it. It was a lovely one from Calm Cove at Hammersley Inlet in South Puget Sound. That was my favorite of the tray. I love it that the restaurant purchases oysters from a farm in the Olympic Peninsula that is owned by the sixth-generation family-run Hama Hama Oyster Company.
Had starters of easy fingerling potatoes with smoked duck and yuzu cream, hispi cabbage with baby anchovies and asiago cheese, scallop ceviche with mango and passionfruit vinaigrette, and grilled tiger prawns. I really wanted brioche rolls with kombu butter. No more stomach space; decided not to over-do it. Ahahaha.
M wanted carbs in the form of a bucatini alfredo. I definitely wanted that whole flounder meunière. It came with smoked mussels, seaweed butter and parsley. It wasn't too big. It was perfect for us, especially when we were in the mood for fish. We cleaned it. Also had a tenderloin steak and frites for E who doesn't take fish but loves her meats and potatoes.
Humpback is one of those restaurants who isn't fussy about birthday cakes brought into the restaurant. They don't charge a 'cake-age' or be reluctant to serve us the cake after dinner. We appreciate that. We'll always drink enough to cover for the extra trouble when restaurants are this accommodating. :P Tonight, we didn't get a giant cake. We got two tarts instead. Those were super manageable to share when we're all stuffed from savory dishes.
