We cared more about being in a quiet environment than the food at this dinner. Opted to meet at Kaya at The Standard. That guaranteed us some quiet and loads of privacy. I simply wanted to catch up with S IRL and have a good chat tonight. I see her once a year only. Too little.
S wasn't dressed for the blast of the indoor 19°C air-conditioning, and asked to sit outside. I came from a full afternoon of meetings, but I was dressed to sit outdoors too. Teheheheh. This is Singapore — all I need to do is to bring a leather jacket to meetings and I'm sorted to move between 19°C and 32°C. Kaya has no fans ventilating its outdoor area; luckily tonight's weather was kind, it was 29°C in the evening.
Food was mediocre but not too bad. It's a hotel's restaurant that's a breakfast venue in the day, so it would serve up something edible for the night but nothing mind-blowing, as all hotel restaurants do. I didn't mind since it was a convenient location and I also had a discount with the World of Hyatt loyalty program.
Had daikon slaw, the burratina with shoyu jam and crispy renkon chips, duck broth with udon, and very weird cured 'sashimi' (tuna, yellowtail and salmon) with dashi jelly and wasabi vinaigrette. I tried the Porktaku, in the form of a soy-sake braised pork belly, and had it with rice since I was a wee bit hungry. It was okay. The short-grain rice used though, was of poor quality.
We didn't try any of the 'nabe', the slow cooked claypot thingies. It does state that it takes up to 45-minutes to be served. Those sound good. The vegetarian version might be nice with all the pumpkin, edamame and sweet potato. Maybe next time.
