Students in a classroom. Students opened the windows. A window pane fell off its hinges and crashed to the ground 4 floors below.
Students told Lecturer. Lecturer sent in incident report to Head of Department (HOD).
HOD was annoyed and sputtered his first words, "WHO DID IT?!!! If there are any costs involved, tell the students to pay!"

why the HOD didnt ask if anyone was injuried?
obviously, HOD is an administrator. he is so not an educator.
let's just say i don't want him teaching my kids.
but i'd love to have him as a administrator to keep my costs low, earn surplus budget and get a bigger bonus payout.
HE shld be thanking lucky stars that no one got hurt and students' parents are not suing the school. :P
did window pane hit anyone?? anything else damaged???
u know, i hate to sound so cynical. but i do think that this HOD is so screwed and sounds like so many of the civil servants that i've worked with.
and having taught in secondary sch before - i don't even dare to be too optimistic about finding any more of these 'educator's that rachael talks about.
and this is a classic example of why our young ones are instilled with the mentality of shifting blame and not getting blamed when things go wrong.
because they've learnt that blame is the be all.
I wonder if that HOD's always been this way, or is that the result of the brain getting wired by the system over time.
Or maybe it was trauma from past experiences with students that caused such a warped reaction.
sounds like my boss!
sadly, this sounds really familiar...
My first thought would be if anyone was hurt and secondly what should be done to prevent this from happening again.
Cost should be the least thing on my mind, let alone pushing the blame to the kids.
You are passing out homework assignments on yr blog!?!? ;)
Agree with clamshell.
Get rid of the HOD pronto.
i think it's not a matter of who did it? he should ask how did it happen, shouldn't he?
people people, i'm sooo proud of you. you've all got the right head on your shoulders.
love you guys.
to that dude who knows exactly what i'm talking about, see, you're validated.
What total crap! The first concern as a teacher is always the student. If anything, the school must do damage control so that the students do not feel unsafe, resulting in an unsafe study environment. Another HOD relic
toosh: hehehhee. you hit it right on the nail. he's really VERY RELIC! completely out of touch with his lecturers.
