We All Stood

I felt a little sorry for the poor elderly dudes who were rockers at heart but not in their legs. This was a sell-out night for cult band Broken Social Scene. S$120 for a seat at the Esplanade Concert Hall stalls wasn't expensive.

The average age of the crowd tonight was 30. The people occupying the stalls were very used to mosh pits, Big Day Out,
SXSW and indie gigs. They came to the concert hall in birkies and flats for a very good reason. That being, this was an indie gig. Would they even consider sitting down quietly in a chair for 2 hours? The entire hall stood. From the opening 7/4 (Shoreline) which surprisingly saw Imago's Aia De Leon do guest vocals, the crowd bobbed and rocked out till the final encore It's All Gonna Break.

The friends were going ape-shit over the parade of guitars. They couldn't stop jumping.
The poor elderly dudes scattered in the stalls couldn't believe their eyes. They didn't mind standing up for the first song to welcome the band. After that, they took their seats.

The band played on and on; on and on. The dude next to me looked surprised as he realized that this crowd wasn't going to sit down at all. If he wanted to see the band play, he would have to stand up with the crowd all the way.

He leaned over and whispered, "I didn't realize so many young people in Singapore have even heard of the band!" The elderly dude shuffled to his feet and gamely stood alongside us. But in the middle, he sat down to give his knees a breather.
I smiled. Even Kevin Drew probably didn't expect this 1600-strong crowd to be so enthusiastic.
