Somebody Paid My Bill!

At lunch at Fortnum & Mason's bustling Fountain Restaurant, I was surprised by the floor manager who came over to tell me that my particular bill had been paid by another guest who had left. Apparently, I'm not supposed to know how much the total is. (Hello, I can count wat.) The floor manager handed over a bill cover which contained a handwritten note with said guest's name and contact number.

My eyes grew as big as saucers. I had absolutely no clue as to who this gentleman could be. The floor manager was rather tickled too. She helpfully pointed to the table that the gentleman just vacated. No use- I couldn't recall who sat there. My girlfriends had a laughing fit. I've had annoymous strangers buy me drinks and dinner. But it has been a while since somebody did that. This is certainly unexpected.

A generous gesture. My bill would total at least £40. Oh, I had such a lovely pot of top grade bi luo chun (碧螺春 is also spelt as Pi Lo Chun in Europe) . Yes, it's really very classy of him to do that than to send over a bottle of wine or champagne. While pleasing, it's so not necessary.

Obviously I didn't call the number given. I assume that in this day and age, one would leave a cellphone number. So I sent a very polite text to thank the gentleman. That text invited him to drinks in Singapore, but at the same time, I'm sure he wouldn't text/call me back. :)

Well, I'll take it as chivalry still exists.

ladies: quite sweet. but it doesn't elicit that feeling of goodwill in me. i'm not too impressed either. i'll say a gracious thank you. i'm annoyed because now, i owe a stranger a favor. i hate owing favors. especially to pple i don't know. i could track that person down n return him the money. i'm uncomfortable. in fact, i'm considering asking my concierge.

michelle: quite normal really. i was a little bit annoyed- my first thought- 'wtf? i can pay for my own food!'

I've never ever experienced that! I thought that only happens in movies! :D

Don't be annoyed lah, babe. He meant well, I'm sure. I don't think you owe him anything, cos' you did not ask for him to pay what. Just take it as what you've concluded lor. Chivalry does exist. Probably more for you than for me. kekeke..
