None of us have eaten at Sin Chao Gardens (新潮園), which replaced the old Fat Lulu's. By now, it's been open for many months, and it is convenient for all of us, but we haven't stepped in for a meal. We bravely went there for dinner for a belated birthday celebration for E. He has been traveling loads, and we assumed he would miss local and Teochew style food, and might close an eye to less than sterling dishes. Hurhurhur.
We had a table of six, and went to town with the menu. Ordered the gamut of the usual Teochew dishes, including steamed squid and A LOT OF PORK. There was even 'PORK FACE'. Okaaayyy. I couldn't deal with this much pork, so I ate lots of bittergourd and everything else including a huge slice of properly salty chai poh omelette of which I ordered an EXTRA LARGE portion. We passed on the cold crab though. We weren't sure about the food. To our surprise, whatever we ordered was decent! Okay, this means we can do the cold crab at the next round.
The star dish of the night was the steamed mullet. Not in Teochew style. Just regular steamed, and it arrived wrapped in lotus leaves. It was superbly fresh. The Teochew-style steamed pomfret was good, but the mullet roe took the prize. If you appreciate mullet, you'd know how tough it is to find a non-muddy tasting one. The stomach was so tasty, and so was its roe. The kitchen separated the roe out nicely, and that was ridiculously full of awesome fats.
Look at that roe! |
