Jok Jok Mor

The BFF was really sweet. She offered to rent a car to take Choya and I out. No need lah. We can get to many places on foot. And if we really need the ride, the man said the BFF could take his car. We made dinner plans. She kept it easy and flexible for me to decide whether to take the dog along. Of course I ditched the dog! No guilt about leaving Choya at home tonight because it was between two fun and tiring days for her. The BFF teased me, “Aren’t you glad you have a dog and not kids?” I’m not sure which is worse. And it’s not my dog.

Went to dinner at Jok Jok Mor. We were curious as to what they food was about. There were some small bites offered like Thai fish cake, otah, chicken wings and crispy pork. We didn't bother with it. By way of carbs, they offer claypot porridge, and also Mama instant noodles. We'll definitely never opt for noodles. Hmmm, it's jok and also khao tom, and the eatery does the watery khao tom, which is simply boiled rice with a lot of water/soup. Exactly what I HATE to have as porridge. 🙄

The BFF picked the tamarind soup base (mak kum, à¸¡à¸°à¸‚าม), which wasn't too bad. We didn't pick the light soy sauce broth because it could be too salty for us. So the ingredients and soup came in one big pot, and the porridge in mak kum soup base came in another pot. It was hilarious. When we looked over at the other tables for the size of their pots in individual servings (from S$9 to S$15), we realized that ours were gigantic. I had a brain fart and had ordered the S$49 All-in-One Special big pot that could feed three persons. 😂

To be very honest, there's nothing remotely Thai about its flavors. It's interesting, and sure, a new thing in Singapore, but not quite for us lah. The soup stock is barely passable. It's like flavored boiled water without much thought given to the mesh of... flavors that the ingredients would impart. I understand they've been tweaked for the local palate, and I feel that the tweak isn't just in terms of spice levels. There's nothing wrong with the food or menu. It's just that if I wanted Thai food or jok (preferably Cantonese style congee/chok), Jok Jok Mor won't be my first choice.
