I've always used liquid washes, simply because there's easier access to better-made bottles, and it seems more hygienic. Not all bar soaps are made equal either. Besides being harsher on the skin, bar soaps do carry bacteria on the surface and in the sludge. Never share soap, and always keep it out of being soaked in water.
I'm iffy about essential oils and the allergies don't do well with plant extracts. I'm not keen on floral scents either, so I don't fancy many of the fragrances of liquid or bar soaps. Same conditions go for shampoo and perfumes too. I tend to veer towards sea salt, coconut, citrus fruits, lemongrass, ginger, olive oil and such.
Finally bought my first bar of soap to use on the body. Picked out a 'Fresh Sea Salt' from A La Maison. The current soap holder isn't ideal but the soap doesn't sit in sludge. So it will do while I hunt for something better that is more well ventilated.
I've used the soap for a few showers now. The faint scent isn't offensive and it's extremely acceptable. The skin doesn't seem dry after, and once the moisturizer goes on, it doesn't feel different from the after-effects of using liquid washes. It's pretty okay! Since I use two types of body washes at any one time with a loofah, I'm probably going to toggle between a bottle of liquid soap and a traditional bar that is better made than the ones in the olden days.

I do like using bar soap too. but only when I'm sure no other persons will touch my bar soap when I'm not looking... haha. I've only used it for hands, not body so far, cos, as like you've mentioned, gotta find an effective soap holder in the shower (not so easy).
Amazon has great soap holders! I just bought and waiting for them arrive. heh.
