It was raining and we were just hanging out at our friends' for easy late afternoon drinks. Then it was time to leave. We didn't make dinner plans together. It was supposed to be just drinks. The man and I decided to walk out to see what's there to eat. The friends decided to join us too. So we took a stroll down the streets. Dinner was an impromptu and random walk-in to Blue Smoke. We would sit outdoors anyway. The rainy evening added to the lower humidity and cooled the area.
Blue Smoke is part of The 1925 Brewing Co. The kitchen terms itself as an 'Asian smokehouse'. I was quite pleased with the menu's Asian flavors. I've passed by this gastropub so often but never made to walk in or find out how its drinks and food menus are. Tonight, we ate and drank loads!
Since we had a table of four, we pretty much ordered three mains to share. We had the signature garam-masala-marinated 20-hour smoked beef brisket (we chose point end) served with pickles and rendang sauce, 500g of lychee-wood-smoked stingray steak that has been marinated with Filipino fermented shrimp fish paste (bagoóng). I couldn't resist the sambal belachan okra, and that delicious charred napa cabbage was really delicious. Had to mop up all these with the Dirty Rice Basmati.
Of course the beers are from The 1925 Brewing Co. My lychee lager was pretty tasty. All the lighter beers went great with all the sambal and spices! Food was a bit greasy, but it was rather delicious! It's innovative too. I hope this Asian smokehouse survives for a bit more.
