I swear the husband saw 'breaded Muar otah' on the menu and decided on Yara for dinner. So yes we had that as an appetizer that mostly went into the husband's stomach. The alcohol list is mediocre, skip it. Unless the table wants to share an easy bottle of wine, then that's okay in terms of prices vs selections. They do have some cocktails if you're into it.
The restaurant wasn't full on a week day. When we stepped in and the young servers led us to a table right next to two diners, I asked to sit at a farther table. Come on, the whole place is empty. You have at most two other reservations. There's plenty of space. Why put me next to a table who's obviously enjoying a quiet evening and talking very loudly and didn't me next to them to be forced to listen to their entire conversation?
The soups were good. In fact, those soups were mains by themselves! The 'Karana jackfruit bakwan kepiting' is vegetarian and came with short-grained brown rice. It held jackfruit meatballs, mushroom dashi, poached asian greens, bamboo shoots and pickled shiitake mushrooms. While a tad heavy with sesame oil, it tasted fine overall. The other soup was a clear fish bone broth and was absolutely delicious. It's the 'Yu-Tang Clam Bowl' full of sliced wild caught balai threadfin, flower clams, poached asian greens & pickled shiitake mushrooms, and there was beehoon in it.
I was quite sad that the grilled fish of the day done with sambal ijo and sambal matah isn't available. I wondered if they didn't have the fish or didn't make either sambal. Tonight, they offered a black cod or a salmon, neither of which I wanted. I specifically do not eat either of these fish. Ugh.
So for our main, we took the ~450g pork tomahawk to share. It was done pink in the center. Medium, if you will. So I assume it would have been seared above 65dC. It was very tasty and super tender. The extra bak kwa glaze was prudently served at by the side, and there was scallion and ginger oil which I loved. We didn't finish the soups at a go. We saved the rice and some beehoon. The pork went so well with rice. Hahahaha.
